A Newton County man is facing charges after police say he fired a gun into the air at a Covington gas station and then crashed his car on the interstate.
Michael Chevalier of Covington was seen at a Shell station on Alcovy Road on May 9, according to a police report. A witness said the 39-year-old fired three rounds into the air about 11 p.m.
Surveillance footage captured Chevalier as he staggered toward the front door of the gas station and knocked on the window, the report states.
“He appeared to be arguing with no one in particular,” an officer wrote in the report.

Then, the report states, Chevalier went back to his car, rooted around for something and fired off at least three more rounds. “He is then seen yelling, before getting back into his vehicle and speeding off.”
About 15 minutes later, officers arrived to a single-car crash on I-20 West near mile marker 92, a second police report states.
An officer wrote in the report that a shotgun was visible on the roof, so Chevalier was asked to move away from the car.
Chevalier smelled strongly of alcohol, the report states.
The officer performed a field sobriety test and arrested Chevalier on DUI charges. In addition to the shotgun, the officer said a handgun was found inside the car.
Witnesses and the clerk at the Shell station positively identified Chevalier as the man who had fired rounds earlier and a reckless conduct charge was added, the report states.
