A Lawrenceville woman died Monday evening from injuries suffered early Memorial Day in a single-vehicle crash, Gwinnett County police said Tuesday.

Yovana Gonzalez, 23, was heading south on Oak Road about 3 a.m. when the 2014 GMC Sierra she was driving lost control around a curve, hit a street sign, struck a large tree and burst into flames, police said.

A 22-year-old passenger was able to make it out of the pickup, but Gonzalez had to be cut out the truck by first responders, Gwinnett police said.

Both were taken to Gwinnett Medical center with life-threatening injuries, but Gonzalez died less than 24 hours later.

Last year, Mayor Bottoms called for the closing of ACDC, citing the declining number of inmates housed and the increase in costs to operate the center.

Six soldiers were honored, each receiving Meritorious Service Medals, Thursday for heroic actions responding to the shooting at Fort Stewart. “One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers — under stress and under trauma and under fire — absolutely saved lives from being lost,” U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told reporters as the six soldiers stood near him Thursday. “They are everything that is good about this nation.” (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
