An Athens high school student was arrested Wednesday after taking a pistol to school, police said.

The firearm was found in the 15-year-old boy’s bookbag at Clarke Central High School, Athens police said in a news release.

A school resource officer and school administrators were tipped off about the gun. It’s unclear whether the firearm was loaded.

The pistol was confiscated, and the student was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, the release said. He was taken to the county’s juvenile detention center. AJC.com only identifies juvenile suspects when they’re being charged as adults.

“(Athens police) and the Clarke County School District take the security of school children and employees seriously and encourage families to discuss the dangers of weapons in school,” the release said, in part. “Please remind your children to report any weapons or threats to an adult immediately.”

No other details were provided.
