A 4-year-old boy died after being found in the bottom of a pool in Troup County on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The child was found around 10:15 a.m. in the 100 block of Willis Drive, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The person who called 911 found the child in the pool, retrieved him and began performing CPR until fire personnel arrived on the scene, the release said. The child was pronounced dead shortly after.

The incident is being investigated as a possible drowning, and the sheriff’s office said it “appears to be a terrible tragedy.” No further details were provided.

An investigation is ongoing.
