DeKalb County police searched early Friday morning for the driver in a deadly pedestrian accident who abandoned their vehicle and ran away.

The pedestrian was hit by a passing vehicle at the intersection of Candler Road and Ember Drive about 12:30 a.m., according to police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer.

“The driver of the vehicle stopped a short distance away from the accident but then fled the area on foot,” he said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers searched the area for the driver for several hours overnight but came up empty, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Spencer said detectives are still working to locate the driver. It is unclear if the driver has been identified.

The incident remains under investigation.
