An inmate died while in custody last week in west Georgia, authorities said.

Marquis Hayslett, 28, was found unresponsive in his Carroll County jail cell on the morning of Nov. 18, according to a news release from the GBI.

After an alleged incident with his girlfriend, Hayslett was arrested at about 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 15 by Villa Rica police, the news release said. He was charged with one count of simple assault and one count of family violence.

While behind bars, Hayslett was placed on medical holding because he required attention for an unspecified illness, the GBI said.

After he was found unresponsive, emergency medical services were called but were unable to revive him, according to the release.

The cause of death has not been determined. The GBI said they will conduct an autopsy and are investigating the incident.

No other information was released.
