A Gainesville man is accused of beating a 5-year-old boy last week, authorities said.

Willis Anthony Humphrey, 35, was arrested Wednesday and faces a charge of first-degree child cruelty, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

On March 12, he allegedly beat the child in a home in the 4700 block of Centrell Road, the release said. The boy’s injuries included severe and visible bruising on his back, arm and neck.

The child is “doing fine” and is in the custody of his father, the release said. The Division of Family and Children Services was notified about the incident. The relationship between the child and Humphrey is unclear.

As of Thursday evening, Humphrey remained in the Hall County jail without bond.
