Authorities arrested a former Hall County deputy this week after she allegedly made false statements during a July sexual-assault investigation.

Deputies arrested Margaret Brumbelow, 30, of Lula, on Monday after she reported in July that she was sexually assaulted by another deputy, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The ensuring investigation determined that was a false allegation.

Brumbelow was fired shortly before her arrest. She posted $5,700 bond and was released from the Hall County Jail on the same day. She had worked in the office since July 2016.

“Incidents like these are very difficult for law enforcement agencies, but they must be addressed when they occur,” Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch said in the release. “We take reports of crime seriously, and members of our agency, assisted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, diligently investigated this allegation. While I’m thankful no attempted assault occurred, the falsehood could not be overlooked. Our department is full of excellent Deputies and professionals. Cases like these are the exception.”

The internal investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
