A former Gwinnett County high school teacher has been arrested after police say she had a sexual relationship with a student.

The victim’s mother found several inappropriate messages between her son and former Mills Creek High School language arts teacher Julee Sams Impara and confronted her about the relationship, Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

Impara, 48, did not deny the relationship, Pihera said.

Gwinnett police said they began their own investigation on Jan. 15.

The victim told investigators he met Impara on the first day of school because she was one of his teachers. It was not uncommon for Impara to give out her personal cellphone number to all her students, he told police. She encouraged them to contact her if they had any issues, he said.

The victim told investigators he and Impara started having sexual contact outside of school and Impara picked him up at his home on occasion, Pihera said. The lead investigator obtained evidence indicating the teacher and student were having a sexual relationship while she was still his teacher. She resigned Dec. 9.

Impara was arrested and booked into the county jail Tuesday on one count of sexual assault.
