A woman suspected in the overdose death of her 9-month-old grandson was arrested Thursday in Paulding County, Sandy Springs police said.

Tonya Monroe, 45, was wanted on charges of murder, possession of methamphetamine and first degree cruelty to children following the infant’s death.

Police got a call March 11 about an unresponsive baby at the Legends at Dunwoody Apartments off Colquitt Road, officials said last month. The baby was dead when they arrived.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the baby died of a methamphetamine overdose, leading detectives to start a murder investigation, police said.

During that investigation, Sandy Springs detectives identified Monroe as the suspect.

Warrants were obtained June 14 for Monroe’s arrest, but police did not know her whereabouts. Police found her after a search that spanned at least three counties — Fulton, DeKalb and Paulding. She had changed the color of her hair from blonde to brown.

Police have not said how they found Monroe or why she was in Paulding County.

“No other details are available at this time,” Sandy Springs police Sgt. Forrest Bohannon said in an email.

Monroe is being held at the Fulton County Jail.
