A 16-year-old girl from Roberta died in a car wreck involving a tractor-trailer in central Florida on Friday, authorities confirmed.
A 2001 Honda Accord and a tractor-trailer were both traveling southbound on I-75 near milepost 329 in Wildwood, Fla., when the Honda apparently veered off the interstate, according to a news release by the Florida Highway Patrol that was obtained by AJC.com.
The driver, Shanaya Prater, 18, of Warner Robins, allegedly overcorrected and entered the path of the tractor-trailer, causing them to collide, the release said.
This caused 16-year-old passenger Makhaya White to be ejected from the Honda when it struck a guardrail, and she died at the scene, the release said. She allegedly was not wearing her seatbelt.
Prater, Dymond Moore, 16, of Bonaire, and Nyheshia Anderson, 11, of Bonaire were all transported to the UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla., with serious injuries, the release said. The incident is not alcohol-related, the release said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Kamari Kirgger, 27, of Jonesboro, was not injured in the accident, the release said.
The crash closed multiple lanes of southbound I-75 for nearly five hours. The release said charges are pending.
