A Georgia State Patrol trooper shot and wounded a Covington man Thursday morning after he brandished a weapon during a traffic stop, according to police.
Cardal Dwayne Haywood, 20, was shot around 11:20 a.m. in Rockdale after the trooper tried to stop him for following too closely on Salem Road, according to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright.
When the emergency equipment was activated on the patrol car, the man pulled his Mitsubishi Galant around to the back of a QuikTrip at 2400 Salem Road. The trooper blocked the driver’s side of the Mitsubishi, but then the man allegedly bailed out.
“The suspect exited the vehicle from the passenger side and attempted to flee on foot. The suspect then pointed a weapon at the trooper at which time the trooper fired. The suspect was hit in the thigh and disarmed,” Wright said in an email.
Haywood was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment. The injury is not life-threatening, Wright said.
The investigation has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is routinely done following an officer-involved shooting. The incident is also under being looked at by the Special Investigations Division of the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
The trooper has been placed on routine administrative leave, Wright said.
