University of Florida freshman quarterback Treon Harris is facing a charge of sexual battery on a female student.
Investigators said the incident happened early Sunday morning in a residence hall on the UF campus.
Harris rallied the Gators to a win over Tennessee on Saturday.
It was expected he would replace junior quarterback Jeff Driskel as the starter this weekend against LSU.
The University Athletic Association suspended Harris from all team activities.
The University Police Department is investigating the incident and is using the Gainesville Police Department Forensic Crime Unit to collect and analyze evidence.
The Gators canceled a regularly scheduled news conference on Monday.
Attorney Huntley Johnson is defending Harris in court and issued this statement to Action News in Jacksonville.
“I will be disappointed if Harris is arrested because I don’t think this merits an arrest," said Johnson.
Action News reporter Deanna Bettineschi is in Gainesville gathering more information.
