Former Barrow County deputy charged with sexual assault
A former Barrow County deputy sheriff is facing sexual assault charges in connection with an incident involving a woman in custody, authorities said.
William Stephenson Mitchell, 42, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault after he transported a female in custody to the Barrow County Jail in March, according to a release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Mitchell also has been charged with one count of false statements or writings, and one count of violation of oath of public office.
The incident occurred March 12, the GBI release said. On March 18, Barrow Sheriff Jud Smith learned of the incident, and he contacted the GBI three days later.
Mitchell was terminated before criminal charges were filed, the release said. He has surrendered to the Barrow County Jail.
