A driver has been charged in connection with the Friday morning wreck that killed a child, police said.
Symia Knight, 12, was critically injured when Robert Culver’s pickup truck clipped the back of the Chevrolet the girl rode in Friday, police said.
Symia later died at an area hospital, Atlanta Police spokeswoman Kim Jones said.
Culver has been cited with misdemeanor second-degree vehicular homicide and failure to yield, Jones said.
“The driver of the white truck was travelling eastbound and tried to make a left turn,” Jones said. “As the grey vehicle was coming through the intersection (the truck) clipped the vehicle in the rear and sent it into a spin.”
The Chevrolet spun out of control and came to a final rest in the grass near the intersection, police said.
Symia was riding in the back seat.
Jones said the light the truck saw was green, but the driver is still at fault.
“He did not allow her to clear the intersection before he made the turn,” Jones said.
The woman driving the vehicle also was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for her injuries, police said.
Police were called to the intersection of Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and Fulton Industrial Boulevard around 7:15 a.m., for the accident that involved a white truck.
Police initially characterized the wreck as a hit-and-run and said Symia was 8 years old.
Jones said the driver of the truck returned to the scene of the accident, and family members confirmed Symia’s age.
Eastbound lanes were closed on Hollowell and westbound traffic was backed up to I-285 for a time, but traffic has since cleared.
