A man accused of slitting his son’s throat and then burying him in a shallow grave was indicted on murder and aggravated assault charges Thursday, the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office said.

Montrais Boyd Sr. was also indicted on two counts of cruelty to children after authorities said he chased and stabbed the 5-year-old boy two months ago in front of two children at a Lithonia home, according to the indictment. He was also formally charged with possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.

Authorities said the man stabbed Montrais Boyd Jr. on Feb. 21 while the boy’s mother and paternal grandmother were away, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. Boyd Sr. and his wife were visiting their son, who lived with his grandmother.

When the younger Boyd’s mother returned to the Rocky Pine Drive residence, children inside the home alerted her that the child was stabbed and buried, DeKalb district attorney spokeswoman Yvette Jones said in a news release. Montrais’ mother retrieved her son’s body and called police.

But it was too late: He was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy confirmed Montrais died of sharp, blunt injuries to the neck, according to the DeKalb medical examiner. A motive has not been released.

Authorities arrested Montrais Boyd Sr. at the home. At the time, family members told Channel 2 Action News that he suffered from schizophrenia.

Months before the stabbing, Boyd was involved in a June 18 high-speed chase in Flagstaff, Arizona, according to Channel 2. Montrais Jr., then 4, was with him at the time.

After the chase, a naked Boyd got out of his car and began pounding a police car, according to dash-cam footage obtained by Channel 2. He then got back in his car and crashed into the patrol car.

Boyd remains in the DeKalb County jail without bond.
