A former Fulton County police officer is now a convicted felon and sex offender.

A DeKalb County jury on Thursday found Michael Bernard Wilson, 32, guilty of two counts of child molestation, and he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, court officials said.

“We are dedicated to protecting our citizens from all predators,” DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said in an email statement.

Wilson was arrested in November 2010 after he was accused of molesting and raping a 12-year-old girl. The girl’s mother called DeKalb police, who arrested the Ellenwood resident during a traffic stop, police said.

He was initially suspended without pay and eventually terminated from the Fulton County police.

“He was in a position of respect and trust,” James said. “It is truly alarming that an individual tasked with protecting the public has violated his oath of office and became the predator himself. Justice was served today.”

It is unclear where Wilson will serve his sentence.
