A Hall County man and his two adult sons were arrested Sunday after allegedly assaulting a man and killing his dog.

Dwayne Motes, 51, and sons Nicholas, 28, and Matthew, 27, were arrested during a traffic stop following the Sunday evening incident at a residence on Benson Drive in Gainesville. Authorities told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Dwayne Motes had an argument with a 55-year-old man before leaving and returning with his sons.

Motes and his sons struck the victim on the head multiple times before firing several shots from a .22-caliber rifle into his car, Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Deputy Nicole Bailes said in an email. The victim’s dog was inside the car and struck with at least one of the bullets.

“The dog did not survive the injuries,” Bailes said.

All three Motes men were charged with cruelty to animals, battery and reckless conduct, among other offenses. Dwayne Motes was also charged with public drunkenness and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
