The Dacula city councilman who rang up more than $11,000 on his city credit card on pizza and fast food, car rentals and insurance, discount shoes and other charges has resigned.

Reeves was arrested in March and accused of theft in connection with his city credit card use. But he remained on Dacula’s city council until last week.

On May 1, the council passed a resolution asking Reeves to resign, Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks said. The next day, Reeves sent a notice of resignation to Wilbanks by a text message, followed by a letter, Wilbanks said.

In his letter, Reeves said he could no longer serve on the council because he no longer lived in Dacula. He did not mention the credit card charges, Wilbanks said.

In his letter, Reeves also asked that the salary he would have received as a council member this year be applied to the credit card charges. That salary would come to about $1,700 through this month.

Wilbanks said he was relieved to receive Reeves resignation.

“It’ll all get behind us one of these days,” he said.

Under the city’s charter, it’s up to the remaining council members to select a replacement to serve the rest of Reeves term. The term ends December 2017.
