A Flowery Branch man accused of breaking a woman’s hand, dragging her into a car and then wrecking the car was arrested Wednesday, authorities said.

Benny Eugene Abernathy, 35, of Flowery Branch, allegedly ran away from the upside-down 2016 Nissan sedan on Old Winder Highway before authorities arrived May 23, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The woman, who was an acquaintance of Abernathy, was left with more injuries as a result of the wreck and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Alcohol and speed are considered factors in the wreck, the release said.

Abernathy was arrested at a home in the 3200 block of Laprad Circle, the release said.

He faces charges of aggravated battery, DUI of alcohol, failure to report an accident, failure to maintain lane of travel, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, serious injury by motor vehicle and driving too fast for conditions, according to Hall County Jail records.

No bond has been set for the aggravated battery or serious injury by vehicle charges, jail records show.

An investigation is ongoing.
