UPDATE: 12-year-old hit by stray bullet opens eyes, shakes head

Calin Wooten, 12, was shot by a bullet while inside his Mableton home on Friday night.

A 12-year-old hit by a stray bullet Friday night inside his Cobb County home opened his eyes and shook his head for the first time, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Calin Wooten had been in a medically-induced coma at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, the news station reported.

According to Cobb County police, Calin and his mother were in their home in the 5000 block of White Boulevard in Mableton when a bullet came through the window and hit him in the abdomen. At the time, he was sitting at the kitchen table and playing a game on his computer.

“The bullet pierced his intestines, put a hole in his intestines and went to the second part of his liver,” Calin’s mother, Shamena Wooten, told Channel 2. “Another half-an-inch and he would have been gone.”

She said she couldn’t hear the shot, just Calin’s screams.

“Why,” Shamena Wooten asked. “Why are people just shooting guns?”

Police believe the shot came from the next neighborhood over, but no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Cobb County Police Department at 770-499-3945.

“We need that community to step up and help this grieving mom out right now,” Cobb County police Sgt. Wayne Delk told Channel 2.

Calin remains in the hospital and faces a long recovery, the news station reported.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help raise money for Calin and his family.
