A Cobb County man was recently indicted on a felony charge in connection with the death of his dog in 2018, authorities said.

Errol Jrome Garnett, born in 1990, faces an aggravated cruelty to animals charge after being accused of starving his black and white female Labrador mixed breed to death, according to court records. He was indicted Jan. 23.

According to his arrest warrant, he “did maliciously torture” the dog by starving it Jan. 25, 2018. The dog died at his apartment in the Stone Ridge at Vinings Apartment complex, which is near Cumberland Mall.

He’s accused of inflicting the dog with “severe and prolonged physical pain” through starvation, the warrant said.

The University of Georgia performed a necropsy, finding that the dog died from “a chronic insufficient caloric intake to meet its metabolic needs,” the warrant said.

Michigan State University also conducted a bone marrow test, which found that the fat content of the dog’s bone marrow was 1.1%. Normal fat levels are supposed to be 59.4%, so this “clearly (indicated) starvation of the dog,” the warrant said.

The warrant was signed Nov. 28, 2018, but Garnett was not arrested until November 2019, according to court records. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of providing a false name, address or birthday to law enforcement.

He was granted a $7,800 bond, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office said. Garnett’s next court date is scheduled for March 2.
