Convicted teen cop killer Jonathan Bun was found guilty last week of robbery for the 2011 incident that brought him into contact with the Clayton County Sheriff’s deputy he fatally shot.
On Sept. 26, a Clayton County jury convicted Bun, 18, of armed robbery for pulling a stick-up at a Forest Park gift shop in January 2011. The jury took just a day and a half to find him guilty.
Surveillance video captured a then-16-year-old Bun and led Clayton County police to issue an arrest warrant.
Bun’s attorney Lloyd Matthews is hoping a judge won’t tack additional time on to the life-plus-70-years sentence his client received in August.
“I’m asking the judge to run the sentence concurrent with the [murder] sentence,” Matthews said. “If the DA’s office has their way, he will get life consecutive to the sentence he is now serving.”
On July 20, 2011, Deputy Richard “Rick” Daly stopped the car the teen was in to serve Bun with that arrest warrant, and Bun fired at Daly, killing the 25-year lawman.
Bun ran into the nearby woods where he hid, as an army of police from multiple jurisdictions combed the woods in a five-hour manhunt.
The teen was eventually arrested, and was tried and convicted in May. Clayton County Superior Court Judge Deborah Benefield sentenced Bun in August.
Xavier Carter, who was a witness for the prosecution in Bun’s murder trial, was also convicted in the armed robbery trial last week. Carter’s charges were reduced to a single count of robbery, and he will serve three years in prison followed by seven years of probation, according to court records.
Bun is scheduled to appear again before Benefield to be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
