A man is charged with reckless conduct after a child found a gun and shot himself Thursday, police said.
The shooting happened on Park Valley Drive in northwest Atlanta around 12:15 p.m., Officer Lukasz Sajdak, a spokesman for Atlanta police, said in an email.
Sajdak said two brothers found a .25-caliber handgun under a mattress and started wrestling over the weapon. The gun went off and a bullet hit the 8-year-old in the hand, exited his thumb and “projectile” went into the boy’s chest. He is in good condition and his injuries are not life-threatening, Sajdak said.
The older brother told police about additional guns hidden under the master bedroom mattress, which police then confiscated.
Police said three adults were in the house at the time and a brother of the mother’s boyfriend was arrested in connection with the shooting. The mother was not charged because police believed she had nothing to do with the accident, Sajdak said.
