Cashier at Target accused of being part of gift card scheme

Peachtree City police say a Target cashier loaded nearly $30,000 onto gift cards.

Peachtree City police say a Target cashier loaded nearly $30,000 onto gift cards.

Peachtree City police said a cashier at a Target store loaded 29 gift cards with $1,000 each — but no one ever paid for them, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Police believe the theft is part of a string of similar incidents in the metro area. Police in Buckhead recently caught two suspects trying to load $14,000 onto gift cards.

Peachtree City officers think two suspects convinced the woman to do it, telling her they would be able to override the gift card transaction, Channel 2 reported.

“It all happened in one day. It took about 10 or 15 minutes. It’s quick,” said Tim Pierson, an investigator with the Peachtree City Police Department. “They swipe a card, and don’t accept payment. Swipe the next card, and don’t accept payment. Over and over again.”
