Investigators in Alpharetta are trying to track down who broke into two restaurants and used a blow torch to steal money from their safes.
The burglaries happened about 2 a.m. Tuesday at McDonald’s and Popeyes restaurants near the corner of Old Milton and North Point parkways, according to an incident report obtained by AJC.com.
Police at the scene said there was a burning smell in the air and water was on the floor when they arrived. The drive-thru window at the McDonald’s had been knocked off its track, the report said.
Surveillance footage shows a man with a dark hoodie and a white mask breaking into the McDonald’s through the drive-thru window, according to the report. The man then let another suspect inside to serve as a lookout, the report said.
While the second suspect kept watch, the man used a torch to cut the side of the Brinks safe open. Then, after taking some of the money, both men left through the window.
Investigators later learned that the Popeyes restaurant two doors down from the McDonald’s was burglarized in the same manner.
“The drive-thru window was broken out and the safe was cut,” an incident report said.
It is not clear how much money was stolen in either incident. Investigators said some cash was left in the safe at McDonald’s, but nothing was left behind at Popeyes.
The manager at McDonald’s told police a Brinks employee will have to determine how much was taken because he doesn’t have access to the safe.
An investigation is ongoing.
