A Brunswick city commissioner has been charged in the case of the fatal shooting of a baby in Brunswick on March 21, according to news reports.
Commissioner James Henry Brooks Sr. was arrested and charged with influencing a witness and obstructing the investigation. He was booked into the Glynn County jail Thursday night, according to a report in the SavannahNow website Friday.
Brooks was being held on $1,256 bond for obstruction. He is also being held without bond on the charge of influencing a witness, according to the Associated Press.
Brooks was at the Glynn County Courthouse Monday when Karimah Elkins, 36, the mother of 17-year-old De’Marquise Elkins, who has been charged in the baby’s death — left the courthouse after her son’s first court appearance. A police investigator tried to speak with her as she left. Brooks stepped between them and prevented the officer from speaking with the mother, SavannahNow reported.
Karimah Elkins and her 33-year-old sister, Katrina Elkins, were arrested Tuesday on charges that they lied to authorities.
Glynn County police chief Matt Doering told the Associated Press the siblings provided information that led investigators to a small pond where they recovered a handgun. He said the gun was being tested to determine if it was the weapon used to kill 13-month-old Antonio Santiago last week.
Police said the toddler was shot to death in a stroller his mother, Sherri West, was pushing on a street near their apartment on Brunswick’s south end. West told police De’Marquise Elkins demanded money, then shot her in the thigh and her child in the head.
West identified Elkins as the shooter from a photo lineup. Dominique Lang, 15, is also charged.
