Power restored to hundreds of Atlanta customers after pursuit ends in crash

Hundreds of people are without power in southeast Atlanta after a wild police chase that ended with multiple crashes.

A police chase involving the Georgia State Patrol ended with a crash Thursday night in Atlanta’s Cabbagetown neighborhood, authorities said.

The chase began just after 7:30 p.m., when a trooper attempted to pull over a 2006 Hyundai Sonata after the driver made several erratic lane changes on I-285 North near I-20 East, the GSP said in a news release. The driver ignored the trooper’s attempts to pull him over, and he exited I-20 onto Boulevard.

A trooper waited at the end of the exit ramp, and the trooper’s patrol car was struck by the fleeing suspect, who turned left onto Boulevard, the state agency said. The pursuit continued onto Carroll Street, where the driver struck a utility pole before crashing into an unoccupied parked vehicle.

The wreck knocked out the power to more than 400 customers, according to Georgia Power. Power was restored by 6 a.m. Friday, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The suspect, who was described by police as a man with short dreadlocks, ran away from the scene, prompting a manhunt. Atlanta police spokeswoman TaSheena Brown said officers were not involved in the police chase but  assisted with the search. A K-9 unit also swept the area Thursday night.
