Only Ellis was inside the room when officers responded to the motel on Mountain Industrial Boulevard just before midnight. He was found shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Legrand had already taken himself to a hospital to be treated for his wounds. Police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent said Tuesday that he is recovering from his injuries.

Once Legrand is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the DeKalb County Jail on charges of felony murder and criminal attempt to commit a robbery.
