Police: Man shot in Lenox Square parking lot after food court ‘meeting’ with suspect

Police are reviewing security footage to try to identify the shooter.

A man was shot in a Lenox Square parking lot Monday afternoon following a “pre-arranged meeting” in the mall’s food court, authorities said.

Officers responded to the mall about 2:20 p.m., Atlanta police said. The injured man, who was described as alert, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, police spokesman Officer Anthony Grant said.

The victim, who is in his late 40s, and suspect met in the food court “to conduct some type of transaction,” then relocated to the parking lot, Officer TaSheena Brown said. The victim, a friend of his and the suspect all met near a vehicle in the parking lot.

That’s when the suspect, who is an unidentified man, pulled out a gun and shot the victim once, Brown said. The victim’s friend was not injured.

It’s unclear what the meeting was about, and no motive has been provided. The suspect fled the scene after the shooting. No description was released.

Police are looking through surveillance video in an effort to identify the suspect. A tow truck was at the scene to haul away the vehicle, which belonged to the victim’s friend, Channel 2 Action News reported.

This was the third shooting at Lenox Square since December.

Four days before Christmas, a Macy's employee was shot in the stomach during an attempted carjacking in a mall parking deck, AJC.com previously reported. The victim survived the incident and was released from the hospital the same day.

Two men were later arrested in connection with the shooting.

On Jan. 18, Atlanta police sergeants fired shots in the mall parking lot after an armed robbery, the GBI said. One of the suspects was shot twice by the officers.

The injured suspect and another man were both charged.

“These are brazen criminals,” police Sgt. John Chafee told Channel 2. “These are unrelated incidents. However, these all involve brazen criminals who are willing to do this while there is an increased police presence — sometimes in broad daylight.”
