Junior varsity basketball player dies after collapsing at Henry County game

A Henry County high school junior varsity basketball player died Friday night after collapsing during a game, school officials confirmed.

An Eagle’s Landing High School student collapsed while the team was playing at Woodland High School in Stockbridge, Henry County Schools spokesman J.D. Hardin confirmed to AJC.com. The student’s family has been notified of the death, but the student’s name has not been released.

Hardin sent a statement that said:

“We are saddened to share that we did have a student athlete that required medical attention during a sporting event in our county this evening. He was transported to Piedmont Henry Hospital, and it has since been confirmed he passed away. Our thoughts and condolences go out to this student’s family. We will have grief counselors available for students and staff upon their return to school on Monday. At this time, we have no further details regarding this matter.”

Eagle’s Landing High School posted about the incident on Facebook on Saturday morning, and the post said, in part:

“We are saddened to share that our Eagle’s Landing High School family suffered a loss last night with the passing of a student-athlete ... Our thoughts and condolences go out to this student’s family and our ELHS community.”

Teams and coaches from across Henry County and metro Atlanta have taken to Twitter to post their support and condolences for the Eagle’s Landing community.
