An Athens man who killed a 52-year-old Marine veteran during a dispute over a car was sentenced Thursday to life in prison, prosecutors said.
Darrious Dajohn Showers, 20, pleaded guilty to murder in connection with the May 2019 shooting of Samuel David Jordan outside his Madison County home. He won’t be eligible for parole until 2049, said Northern Circuit District Attorney Parks White.
Jordan, who served 20 years in the U.S. Marines, was also a former jailer in Athens-Clarke County, the Athens Banner-Herald reported. He had a wife, two sons and four stepchildren, according to his obituary.
“Showers came into Madison County and tried to take back a car that had been borrowed from his mother,” White told AJC.com. “When he arrived at the home, there was an argument between the two of them. Mr. Showers produced a 9 mm handgun and opened fire on Mr. Jordan, who was shot six times.”
Showers was linked to the murder because his mother reported the car stolen shortly before the fatal shooting, prosecutors said.
“After the shooting occurred, she called back to dispatch in Athens and said, ‘Don’t worry about it. My sons have gotten the car back,’” White said.
Showers’ 18-year-old brother, Dykell Dentavious Showers, has been indicted for murder in the case, but his trial is still pending.
During his sentencing hearing, Darrious Showers apologized to Jordan’s family and told them he took responsibility for his actions, White said, which is why he was given the possibility of parole.
