Authorities said an argument broke out June 13 during a vigil for Christopher Calhoun, who died two days earlier at a neighboring apartment complex on New Town Circle. Police said Weatherby fired several shots into the crowd of nearly 200 people in the 300 block of Thomasville Boulevard.

According to the police report, Smith was shot multiple times as he tried to separate people involved in the altercation. He died en route to a hospital.

Deputy Chief Jeff Glazier, commander of the Atlanta Police Department’s Field Operations Division previously told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution he believed the shooting was in retaliation for Calhoun’s death.

About 10:30 p.m. June 11, Calhoun was shot in the stomach during a shootout at an apartment complex. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Another man, Corey Miller, was shot multiple times in the legs during the shootout and was taken Grady.
