A man was shot and killed Wednesday in the 300 block of Thomasville Boulevard.

A 27-year-old man was fatally shot in southeast Atlanta during a vigil to remember another shooting victim, police said.

Nearly 200 people were gathered Wednesday afternoon in the 300 block of Thomasville Boulevard for the vigil when an argument started, Atlanta police told Channel 2 Action News.

Eric Smith was shot multiple times and died en route to a hospital, the news station reported.

The description of the shooter has not been released.

Police said the crowd was gathered in honor of Christopher Calhoun, who died after a shootout days earlier at a neighboring apartment complex on New Town Circle. Another man, identified by police as Corey Miller, was injured.

Officers responding to that shooting around 10:30 p.m. Monday found Miller in an apartment with gunshot wounds to the lower legs, and he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Minutes later, Calhoun showed up at the hospital shot in the stomach and in critical condition. He later died.

Police detained the two men who brought Calhoun to Grady after several firearms were found in their vehicle, Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Lisa Bender said.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, ballistic evidence, and witness statements it is believed that the males were engaged in a shootout,” Bender said in a statement.  “Homicide units are interviewing all parties to determine criminal charges.”

Investigations into both fatal shootings are ongoing.
