Alpharetta, Milton tornado sirens knocked offline due to stolen equipment

A repeater was stolen out of an equipment shed, making the sirens useless.

Alpharetta police are searching for the person who stole $20,000 worth of tornado siren equipment, which caused dozens of sirens to go offline across north Fulton county.

Police told Channel 2 Action News someone stole a repeater sometime in the last few weeks that communicated with more than two dozens sirens across Alpharetta and Milton.

“Looks like somebody gained entry to the shack, cut those cables and they knew what they were looking for,” Alpharetta police spokesman Jeff Ross told Channel 2. “We can’t notify the public or anyone else that there’s severe weather coming in.”

Channel 2 reported that Fulton County is lending Alpharetta a portable repeater which will bring the sirens back online until they find a permanent replacement.

Even though tornadoes aren’t expected since we’re not in the middle of tornado season, Channel 2 meteorologist Katie Walls said these sirens are still vital.

“It’s important to realize you could have tornadoes develop any time of the year – day or night,” Walls said.
