I love you – those were the last words four alleged gang members exchanged before being hauled off in squad cars by Cobb County police following a police chase.
Those words are even more fitting since a street gang charge could keep them from seeing each other, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Destany Bellamy, Kevin Scott Sosebee, Adam Canada, and Joshua David Freck are charged with street gang terrorism and prevention, theft and other charges, according to jail records. They were in a stolen car when arrested.
Cobb County police told Channel 2 Action News they hope the street gang charge will help them prevent crimes committed by other gangs.
“We have a gang issue, we’re seeing it over and over again,” Cobb County district attorney Vic Reynolds told the news station.
The charge could get the four gang members five to 15 years in prison.
“So when we charge, it not only can a jury consider it if they convicted them, [but] the judge can have the option of increasing their punishment simply because of that charge,” Reynolds told Channel 2.
Those opposed to the charge said it could lead to character assassination in court and give prosecutors and police departments grant dollars.
The four alleged gang members were in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond.
