Counselors at Lakeside High after teacher dies in prom crash

April 27, 2015

Grief counselors were on hand Monday at DeKalb County’s Lakeside High School after a teacher was killed in a weekend crash with a pair of teens on their way to the school’s prom.

Decatur police spokeswoman Lt. Jennifer Ross said 33-year-old Leah O’Brien was attempting to turn onto eastbound Scott Boulevard from Ridley Circle about 6 p.m. Saturday when her vehicle collided with a car headed west on Scott Boulevard.

The passengers of the second vehicle — two teenagers on their way to the Lakeside High School prom — were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but O’Brien was killed. O’Brien’s 8-year-old daughter was in critical but stable condition, Ross said.

DeKalb County schools spokesman Quinn Hudson told Channel 2 Actions News that O’Brien was a teacher at Lakeside High School. According to an online profile, O’Brien taught family and consumer sciences and also served as a dance team sponsor.

Lakeside High School is at 3801 Briarcliff Road.

No further information was available. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
