Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has tested positive for the coronavirus and is expected to miss Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to reporter Tom Pelissero.
Rodgers informed his teammates Wednesday morning, according to Pelissero.
If Rodgers, a three-time NFL MVP, is unable to play, quarterback Jordan Love will make his first start.
Rodgers reportedly is not vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
Rodgers was quoted as saying he has been “immunized,” but by the letter of the law in the NFL, that does not equal vaccinated, according to Rapoport.
Vaccinated players who test positive can return after they have two negative tests that are taken at least 24 hours apart, The Associated Press reported. Unvaccinated players who test positive are isolated for at least 10 days, the AP reported.
Rodgers was asked at an Aug. 26 media session whether he had been vaccinated, according to the AP.
“Yeah, I’ve been immunized,” Rodgers told the AP. “You know, there’s a lot of conversation around it, around the league, and a lot of guys who have made statements and not made statements, owners who have made statements. There’s guys on the team that haven’t been vaccinated. I think it’s a personal decision. I’m not going to judge those guys. There are guys that’ve been vaccinated that have contracted COVID. It’s an interesting issue that I think we’re going to see played out the entire season.”
