A man died early Friday when the allegedly stolen pickup truck he was driving crashed and burned at the end of a police chase that began near the state Capitol.

Channel 2 Action News reported that two Capitol police officers were flagged down by a motorist who told them that the truck was being driven erratically with no headlights on.

The officers tried to pull over the truck, but the driver didn’t stop, and instead led officers on a high-speed chase.

The truck ran off the road during the chase, taking out a MARTA bus stop sign before the driver lost control on Moreland Avenue at Pickens Street.

The truck’s driver “attempted to get around another vehicle, lost control and crashed into a tree,” Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Stacey Collins told Channel 2.

The driver, whose name has not been released, died when the truck burst into flames.

Authorities told Channel 2 that the truck was stolen from Gainesville.
