A car belonging to one of two North Carolina women who have been missing since last month was found Monday with two heavily decomposed bodies inside.
The heavily damaged car belonged to Paige Escalera, 25, according to the Wilmington Police Department. The gray 2013 Dodge Dart was found about 3 p.m. outside a marina in a deeply wooded area and was covered in vegetation.
Police said they believe the car may have been involved in a high-speed crash.
The department’s 911 records show on April 15, police, fire and EMS were dispatched to the area just before midnight. A caller advised they saw a car in their rearview mirror heading west on Independence Boulevard, going at a high rate of speed, possibly hitting a wall and then going into the wooded area.
When police and other first responders arrived, they were unable to find any signs of a crash.
Both bodies are scheduled to undergo autopsies soon.
Escalera was last seen with her fiancée, Stephanie Mayorga, 27, on April 15, and authorities said at the time the two disappeared under "suspicious" circumstances, according to NBC.
