In her last full year as the head of the city, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is sticking with her holiday season tradition: tempting the Twitter trolls with photos of homemade fare.
The tradition began on Christmas Day 2018, when a photo of the mayor’s macaroni and cheese went viral. Back then, thousands of Twitter users near and far took a break from their Christmas roasts to roast Bottoms’ cooking.
In 2019, the mayor earned better marks with her Thanksgiving sweet potato pies, which drew significantly higher approval from Twitter users.
And Bottoms stuck with pies for Thanksgiving this year. Earlier Thursday, she posted a photo of four pies with the caption: “Before you ask, I stayed in my lane this year.”
What kind of pies was the mayor brave enough to post photos of this year? She didn’t specify. Twitter users think they may be sweet potato again, or perhaps pumpkin.
To Chef Bottoms’ relief, the bulk of the feedback has been positive.
“Nice. You understood the assignment!!” posted one Twitter user.
“How’s that? FOUR pies?? That’s a freeway not a lane. Enjoy,” another reviewer posted online.
To many, the self-awareness Bottoms showed in avoiding a repeat of the mac and cheese fiasco suggests that breathless mockery on social media can do some good.
“Bullying works,” posted one Twitter user, adding a red heart symbol.
Still, dozens of online commentators made it clear that three years isn’t enough time to overcome the apparently haunting memories of the mayor’s 2018 mac and cheese.
“Looks good. Now should you ever try Mac & Cheese again please remember we are here to help,” wrote one social media user.
