The GBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a man in critical condition in Jenkins County Tuesday afternoon.

According to the GBI, Millen police and the U.S. Marshals Service were searching for 29-year-old Larry Jackson, who had active warrants from a previous domestic dispute, in the area of Herndon Street and Williams Street around 3:40 p.m.

Two deputy U.S. marshals located Jackson near Herndon Street after a foot chase with police, the GBI said in a news release. During the confrontation, one of the deputy U.S. marshals fired and struck Jackson.

A weapon was found where Jackson was shot, authorities said.

He was taken to Augusta University Medical Center, which is 50 miles north of Millen, the GBI reported. No officers were injured during the incident.

It was the second officer-involved shooting the agency was asked to investigate Tuesday.

Around 4 a.m., a Douglasville police officer noticed a “suspicious” vehicle in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn Express on Concourse Parkway, according to the GBI. A second officer shortly appeared and they spoke with the two men inside the car, who were identified as 21-year-old Zion Dorsett of Lithonia and 31-year-old Christopher Wilson of East Point.

“After a brief conversation, officers determined that the tag on the vehicle was not registered to that vehicle and the vehicle had been stolen,” the GBI said.

During the conversation, the driver of the car abruptly backed into an embankment and then sped forward, nearly hitting an officer, authorities said. One of the police officers pulled out his gun and fired at the vehicle. The car ran a short distance before driving off an embankment near a Sam’s Club, the GBI said. Dorsett and Wilson were arrested after a brief chase. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The incident in Jenkins County is the 90th shooting involving a police officer that the GBI has been requested to investigate this year.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
