The two men injured in a home explosion in Roswell this week have begun multiple surgeries, according to an update on a Caring Bridge page.
Brendan Morton and Pat Sammons, who have been in intensive care with second- and third-degree burns, are in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital’s burn center.
The Caring Bridge page was set up by Kathleen Morton, and her relation to Brendan Morton is unknown. On Friday, she posted an update that said doctors were “encouraged” after Simmons came out of surgery at 1:30 p.m. She added that Brendan Morton’s surgery was getting underway.
A later update Friday night said Sammons’ surgery lasted five hours and about 70 percent of his burned skin was removed and covered with Integra, which is a temporary synthetic skin. He has a “trach,” presumably a tracheotomy, scheduled for Monday, and the remaining 30 percent of his burns will be removed Wednesday or Thursday.
Brendan Morton’s surgery also lasted five hours and all his burns were removed, the post said. Skin grafting was done on his arms and part of one leg, and the remaining areas were covered with Integra for the time being. A “trach” will be scheduled early next week, and his next surgery is probably in 20 days.
Police said Tuesday night's explosion was caused by a gas leak in a dryer.
A GoFundMe page for Morton, Sammons and their roommate, Win Reid, who received minor injuries in the explosion, has far surpassed its fundraising goal of $3,000. It is currently at more than $31,100.
Channel 2 Action News reported that a dog that had been missing for days after the explosion was found late Friday night.
