A joy ride on an all-terrain vehicle down a busy South Fulton road ended in a serious crash Sunday night, police said.

Multiple ATVs and dirt bikes were “traveling at a high rate of speed” on Flat Shoals Road when one of the ATVs rear-ended a car at the Hillandale Drive intersection about 8 p.m., according to South Fulton police. The rider of the ATV was ejected.

He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said on Facebook. The ATV he was riding was previously reported stolen.

“While there may be a debate as to whether ATVs and dirt bikes should be allowed on the public roadways, there is a clear distinction between what you can do and what you should do,” police spokesman Lt. Jubal Rogers said in a statement.

The injured rider was not identified. Rogers said police will make a determination on charges when an investigation is complete.

No other details about the crash were released.
