Emory Healthcare announced Wednesday evening the first death of one of its patients with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

The patient died “despite the heroic efforts of our physicians, nurses and care team,” Emory said in a statement.

The healthcare system did not reveal which of its hospitals was caring for the patient.

“For this patient’s family, this is an incredibly sad day,” Emory said in its statement, adding that it could not reveal details due to patient confidentiality.

“Emory Healthcare is committed to serving our patients and their loved ones with the most advanced care available throughout this unprecedented situation and beyond,” the health system said.

This is the second coronavirus death in metro Atlanta. The state's first death, at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital was announced last week. Earlier Wednesday, a hospital announced that two southwest Georgia patients who died with coronavirus-related symptoms have been confirmed to have had the virus.
