An 18-year-old University of Georgia student was killed after crashing into a retaining wall Friday morning in downtown Athens.

Martell Rashea Robinson did not stop when approaching the intersection of Pulaski and West Broad streets, according to Athens-Clarke County police. His Toyota Camry crashed into a large concrete wall on the other end of the T-intersection, which is located blocks from UGA’s campus.

Officers responded about 5:45 a.m., police said. Robinson, who was the only person in the car, was severely injured. He was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Robinson, from Columbus, was not wearing his seat belt, according to police.

The cause of the crash and contributing factors are still under investigation, Lt. John Radford said Friday afternoon.
