A fire in Cherokee County on Sunday left a dog dead and four people with a heavily damaged home.

About 5:30 p.m., firefighters responded to the burning structure off Stockwood Drive in unincorporated Woodstock, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services said in a news release. The 911 caller said flames were coming through the front windows and the roof.

When first responders arrived, about 40% of the house was on fire, the release said. Neighbors did not know whether anyone was inside, but they knew at least one animal was inside.

Crews made their way into the house within minutes, controlling the fire and searching for anyone inside, the release said. The four adults who live in the home were not there when the fire started, but their dog died as a result of the blaze.

The 911 caller reported that there were flames bursting through the windows and the roof before firefighters arrived.

While investigators have not determined the cause, they believe the fire began in the back of the home, the release said. The house suffered “extensive” damage due to fire, water and smoke.
