Police say there’s no cause for public concern after an assault rifle was discovered Saturday afternoon in the chapel of a Catholic church in Peachtree City.

Investigators said there is no evidence that the person who left the gun in the church intended to use it.

Officers were called to Holy Trinity Catholic Church after someone discovered the weapon hidden under an unattended jacket in the chapel, police wrote in a Facebook post.

Officers worked through the night to identify the owner of the gun.

Investigators determined that a woman who lives with the owner of the rifle was the person who left the firearm in the church, Peachtree City police said on Facebook Sunday morning.

The woman told investigators she was uncomfortable having the rifle in the house, “so she discarded the rifle at a location where she believed it would be handled safely,” police said.

“Investigators found no indication that she intended to use the rifle or participate in any sort of violent activity,” police said.

No charges have been filed in the incident.
