With the latest announcement of more COVID-19 cases and deaths, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced schools and colleges would be closed for the remainder of the academic year.

Cuomo told the media that the 800 public school districts in his state and hundreds of colleges and universities would not reopen anytime soon. He also shared the update on his Twitter page.

“Given the current situation, K-12 schools and college facilities will remain closed for the rest of the academic year and will continue to provide distance learning,” he tweeted.

“This is the best course of action to keep students, educators and staff safe.”

He made the announcement shortly after providing the latest update on the number of New Yorkers that have died due to the virus in the last 24 hours. As of Friday morning, 289 people had died from disease over the last day. The previous day 306 people died from COVID-19, Cuomo shared in the press conference.

On Monday, President Donald Trump said Monday in a call with governors that states should considering opening school before the end of the school year.

Cuomo announced Tuesday that he would soon decide whether New York schools would remained closed beyond May 15, when the shelter-in-place order is also set to expire for the state.

Schools have been closed across the state since March.
