An Uber driver was shot twice Monday morning in what Brookhaven investigators believe was a case of road rage on Buford Highway.

The driver did not have any passengers with him when he was shot about 4:30 a.m., Brookhaven police Deputy Chief Brandon Gurley told AJC.com from the scene. He was hit in his abdomen and his thigh and is expected to survive.

“The situation is being described as a possible road-rage incident,” Gurley said. “The suspect vehicle was not on scene when our officers arrived. We are currently still processing the crime scene, collecting shell casings and other evidence that may have been left behind.”

The victim was traveling south on Buford Highway and was shot about 300 yards from the Briarwood Road intersection, according to police. Several people called 911 to report the incident.

“The best description we have right now is a white passenger car,” Gurley said of the suspect’s vehicle. “We are working to gather more information about the make and model of that vehicle and the occupants.”

While an investigation was underway, only one southbound lane of Buford Highway was open at Briarwood Road. The road reopened by 11:15 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
